Everyone has that one person in their life that they see as a father figure. What if you had two? And what do kids need more, a father or a dad? That's the question Brad Whitaker asks several times during the movie. And while many believe they're the same thing, Brad disagrees. “Anyone can be father,” he implies. “However not everyone has the patience and endurance to be a dad.” However, Brad proves to be partially right. An accident left him infertile, and he is unable to live his dream as a father; or so he thinks. Therefore, he found a loop-hole by marrying a beautiful woman, Sarah, who has two young children, Dylan and Megan. Brad is determined to be the best DAD he can ever be.

While fighting for ‘approval,’ Brad (mainly) endures several humiliations, which is very funny, not only to the audience, but also to the other characters in the movie. The main characters are outstandingly played by Will Ferrell (Brad Whitaker), Mark Wahlberg (Dusty Mayron), Linda Cardellini (Sara), Scarlett Estevez (Megan), and Owen Vaccaro (Dylan). Their acting is very mature and they express emotions effectively. Also, Ferrell and Cardellini did decent jobs of portraying caring and protective, as well as concerned, parents and spouses. It sent several positive messages about parenting, marriage, and fatherhood. Sarah ended her relationship with the attractive and exciting Dusty because he couldn’t handle responsibilities of a father. Her second time around, she chose someone who is caring, gentle, and has his priorities straight. Brad isn’t dangerous or unpredictable and he is devoted to Dylan's and Megan's needs. Dusty was competing with Brad at the beginning of the movie because of his selfish motivations. However, at the end of the movie, he finally realizes that Brad has fatherhood skills he doesn't, and that gentleness is a very good quality to acquire if you have children. And although Brad wants the children to like him, he also wants to ensure that Dusty still plays his role as their dad. And when Dusty tries to leave, Brad encourages him to be the best dad he can be; in return Dusty also encourages Brad to continue playing his role in their life
