This is a complicated case in my opinion, because the only people who witnessed the murder are Cyntoia and the man she murdered, so we will never really know if she killed out of self defense or not. She is guilty of murder for which life in prison is a justifiable sentence. However if she was doing it out of self defense then we can’t blame her for protecting her life. What made the guy she murdered different than the others that she encountered over the years of forced prostitution, it’s not like she has a history of past murders so that makes you wonder if her life was really being threatened. Maybe she didn’t do it out of self defense and this murder was her way out of the sex trafficking life she was forced into to. Cyntoia Brown the police departments identification team said Johnny Allen, the man Cyntoia murdered appeared to be in the position he was when they found him that he was in when he was shot. His positioning was with his hands folded under his head like he had been asleep when he was shot, and not reaching for a gun like Cyntoia said. If she was killing him out of self defense then there was no reason that she needed to steal his wallet, two guns to sell for money as she stated in her confession to the police department, and then drove his truck to a nearby walmart. Instead, she should have contacted the police and stated that she was a minor that was solicited for sex and shot her abuser out of self defense, but she didn’t do this. On May 7th 2000, fifteen year old Brenton Butler was accused of the murder of Mary Ann Stephens, who had been fatally shot in the head while walking down a breezeway of a hotel with her husband. Two and a half hours later, Butler is seen walking a mile away from where the incident occurred, and is picked up by the police because he fit the description of the individual who shot Mary Ann Stephens. However, the only characteristic of the description that Butler featured was the color of his skin. Police then brought Butler to the scene of the crime in order for Mary Ann Stephens’s husband, James Stephens, to confirm whether or not Butler was the individual who had shot his wife. Almost immediately, Stephens identifies Butler as his wife’s killer.

On May 2, 1998, Cynthia Harrison’s body was found in a restaurant where she and Defendant Timothy Lee Hurst worked. She was found bound, gagged, and stabbed over 60 times and the restaurant safe was unlocked, open and missing hundreds of dollars. The trial lasted 4 days and the State offered forensic evidence that linked Hurst with Harrison’s murder. The State also had witnesses that testified that Hurst had discussed his plan to rob the restaurant. Hurst and Harrison were the only people scheduled to work at the time of the murder. Hurst used an alibi defense, claiming he never made it to work because his car broke down.

When viewed from a strictly medical, psychological aspect, Andrea Yates medical history indicates that after the birth of her first child, she began to suffer from various forms of depression and suicide attempts. If one only examines the paper trail and doesn’t think beyond what the medical history does or does not indicate, then perhaps, Andrea would be innocent by reason of mental insanity as the 2006 acquittal suggest.
