“The small but significant variation found in suicidal thoughts and actions based on bullying and cyberbullying suggests that all forms of adolescent peer aggression must be taken seriously—both at school and at home.” (Hinduja) Suicide is among the top causes of death in the United States today. With technology increasing, it is being debated whether or not technology could be a factoring tool of teens committing suicide. Along with all the new technology advances including social media, comes many disadvantages, including cyberbullying. I strongly believe that cyberbullying has an effect on teens committing suicide. Although that may be true, it is not accurate to state that because the majority of cyberbullied teens don’t kill themselves, that cyberbullying has no effect on those who do. I believe cyberbullying is contributing to teen suicide because the amount of teenagers using social media in the world today. A study done by the Pew Research Center reports that more than 75 percent of adolescents said that they use social media. Teens are also usually susceptible to what people say. Being a teenager myself, I know firsthand the affects of cyberbullying among my peers. There are a few who will not let what other people say affect them, but most people in their teens have low self esteem as it is, and when someone puts them down, especially online, they get really upset and it can lead to severe depression as well as other things. Another refutation to this point is that saying the vast majority of cyberbullying victims do not commit suicide is not proved. The article (Cyberbullying Myths and Realities) never gave any proof or statistics to back up this point. According to a study done by Yale University bully victims are anywhere from 2 to 9 times more likely to commit suicide than non-victims. Of course not everyone who gets cyberbullied will end thier life, but some will. There are many ways that people will try to argue that it has no effect, but there is a lot more evidence to say that it does have an effect rather than does not. How can someone look at the story of 13-year-old Megan Meier and say that her experience with cyberbullying had no contribution to her hanging herself that very night? Her story alone is evidence of how cyberbullying can trigger teen suicide. Besides the evidence of the Megan Meier story, there is a lot more. There is the evidence that being cyberbullied often leads someone into a deep depression, and depression often leads to suicide. An important thing for people to realize is that even when one person commits suicide, it is very serious. The value of a life is more valuable than anything else on this earth, and for someone to be going through something so difficult that they choose to end their valuable life, is a serious issue.
