During the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese government created positive messages and statements in order to spread their new beliefs and customs. Contrary to popular belief, the experience some Chinese citizens received were the complete opposite. In the beginning, the Chinese leader Mao Zedong was trying to guide and inspire the young citizens during the Cultural Revolution by using positive messages. “The world is yours[young people], as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours.”(Source 1) Mao used this quote to convince the young citizens that they have an important role of making China stronger. “In this...revolution...the masses of workers, peasants, and soldiers are playing the role of the main force...”(Source 2) The government
Mao Zedong held a very similar belief when he was left in charge of the peasant revolution in his home province of Hunan. Rather than have the peasants in silent protests against the government he advocated terror attacks against the landowners and officials. This was completely against Chinese tradition which favors more moderate action and an emphasis on harmony. Mao believed that with these “terror attacks” by the peasants, or as he called it their revolutionary potential, that the party can assume a leadership role. Without these acts of violence, without using the fullness of their strength, Mao believes that the peasants could never overthrow the authority of the landowning class.

After Chairman Mao’s death, Ji-Li and the rest of China realize that he was never the right leader for China and instead of improving China’s society, he actually prevented it. In the end, Ji-Li knows she was brainwashed by Mao’s actions. The Communist Party told them what to wear, read, think, and how to act. They never let China be free to be who they are. Mohandas Gandhi and Mao Zedong were two great leaders who succeeded in many ways by their actions and decisions. Gandhi was an Indian leader and Mao a Chinese leader. However, their approach to success, peace, and ultimately, a revolution, was very different. Mao favored peace through violence, and Gandhi favored peace through non-cooperation and standing up for what is right. He also believed that these changes will be accomplished by “conscious suffering”, was the way he put it. However, despite their differences, these two leaders were similar too. The Evolution of China In 1966, Mao ZeDong (leader of the Cultural Revolution) mobilized the Chinese youth to commence the Cultural Revolution, an attempt to change China, and an event in Chinese history. Mao used teenagers called Red Guards to complete orders during this event. His goal was to get rid of the Four Olds and make China a Communist country. However, over 11 million students were pulled away from education into the farm work that Mao that was necessary.
While in school, the young kids would rehearse the Young Pioneer anthem that went, in part, as follows, “We are Young Pioneers, successors to Communism.
