Homework 1 – Critical Thinking Paragraph – Chapter 1
What are the perspective’s on personality?
There are a few very different definitions on what is personality. Each one of these is based on different perspectives established by a variety of experiences. People have different experiences and in order to understand why personalities are so diversified theorists must take into account their background in their research. In order to distinguish and explain what makes a person’s personality, theorists have provided ten different perspectives. Some theorists believe that a person’s personality is substantially based on qualities originating from ancient times, calling this theory the “trait perspective”. There have also been hypotheses on

Sigmund Freud’s theory called psychosocial, was based on the premise that the personality was shaped based on the way people interact and form bonds in their relationships. Other researchers believed a person’s personality was formed by social learning. For example the fact that someone watches something and learns it does not mean that it modifies their behavior. The self-actualization and self-determination perspective, also sometimes referred to as an orgasmic perspective, has its roots in the idea that every person has the potential to grow and develop into a valuable human being if permitted to do so (Carver & Scheier 2012 p.9). Often referred to as psychoanalytic perspective is the philosophy that people have a conflict going on inside their minds which is a constant fight with each personality mentally. In the self-regulation hypothesis it is believed that a person has the will-power to act in the best interest of their true values for an extended period of time. There is also the proposition that a person’s thoughts come from putting together experiences they have encountered …show more content…
A correlation between two variables means they covary in some systematic way. (Carver & Scheier 2012 p.17) When a researcher is attempting to show a parallel between to variations they must find out and confirm that there are two different kinds of relationships. In order to get the facts a lot of people have to be used in research so that the necessary information may be gathered. After the data has been gained it is split into two categories. A scatterplot is a chart that can be used to read the results of a correlation between variables. Using the scatterplot makes it easier to see the differences between the direction and strength of the variable. Once the information is attained and a scatterplot is used a researcher may readily see if the differences that have been attained correlate to the researcher’s
There are many different modern perspectives of psychology. These modern perspectives are cognitive,psycoanalysis,humanistic.socio-cultural,behavioral and evolutionary. When thinking about a key event in regard to different personality theories, I felt that I could most relate that key event of my life to the humanistic and behavioral theory. I will mainly be emphazing on these two modern perspectives. Moreover, I will then evaluate the key concepts and the principles of these two theories, and briefly compare and contrast their thoughts in the following paragraphs.
Regression analysis is also used to understand which among the independent variables are related to the dependent variable, and to explore the forms of these relationships. In restricted circumstances, regression analysis can be used to infer causal relationships between the independent and dependent variables. However this can lead to illusions or false relationships, so caution is advisable;[2] for example, correlation does not imply
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” Personality is characterized by many dimensions of a person’s overall being. The belief that personality stems from one origin is small minded and on many levels, unsupported. If the scope of personality is expanded, it suggests that there is not a single explanation determining a person’s personality and how it is formed. Personality Theories have been generated for centuries by individuals who desire to identify what distinguishes a person’s personality and how it affects their behaviors. What is it that comprises all the unique characteristics about a person?
This course has taught me a lot about the different personality theories as well as the best known psychology theorists that have developed these theories. Personality consists of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make an individual unique. Numerous theories have been emerged to implicit the different features of personality. The main purpose of some theories is to focus on explaining how personality developed.
Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist, was the principle proponent of the psychoanalytic personality theory. Psychoanalytic personality theory is tells us that the majority of human behavior is motivated by the unconscious, a part of the personality that contains the memories, knowledge, beliefs, feelings urges, drives, and instincts that the individual is unaware, and that only a small part of our psychological makeup is actually derived from the conscious experience. The problem is our unconscious mind disguises the meaning of the material it contains. As such, the psychoanalytic personality theory is ver...
Personality is patterns of thinking, behavior and emotional responses that make up individuality over time. Psychologist attempt to understand how personality develops and its impact on how we behave. Several theories attempt to explain personality, using different approaches. The social-cognitive and humanistic approaches are two of many theories that attempt to explain personality. This essay will identify the main concepts of social-cognitive and humanistic approach, identify perspective differences and discuss approach limitations.
A person’s personality has been the subject of psychological scrutiny for many years. Psychologists have drawn up several theories in an attempt to accurately predict and determine one’s personality. Foremost amongst these, is the “Big Five Trait Theory” which stemmed from Raymond B. Cattell’s theory.
Self-regulation is a theory of human behavior involving cognitive, affective, motivational, and behavioral components and it refers to self generated thoughts, feelings and actions that are planned and cyclically adapted to the attainment of personal goals (Boekaerts, Pintrich & Zeidner, 2005). Self-regulation is a continuing process that occurs both consciously and unconsciously that affect the ability to control responses (Strauman, Kolden, Stromquist, Davis, Kwapil, Heerey & Schneider, 2001). It is a skill that has overarching effects on an individual’s ability to tolerate unmet wants or needs, handle disappointments and failures, and work towards success. Hence, self-regulation refers to the
Magnavita, J. J. (2002). Theories of personality: Contemporary approaches to the science of personality. New York: Wiley.
Personality can affect many things in a person’s life. This includes how a person will react to a situation. One can attribute different personality traits to different dispositional or learning theories, such as linking the dehumanizing of a victim to social cognitive theory. One can make an association between interpersonal relational aspects and some of these theories. Personality is an aspect of the self that people often think about but most never truly contemplate the meaning or depth of personality.
Personality can be defined as an individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting. Many personality theorists have put forward claims as to where personality is derived from and how it develops throughout an individual’s life. The two main personality theories this essay will be focusing on is the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) (Bandura, 1986) and the Trait Theory – Five Factor Theory (FFT) (McCrae and Costa, 1995). The SCT allocates a central role to cognitive, observational learning and self-regulatory processes (Bandura, 1986). An individual’s personality develops through experiences with their sociocultural environment. Whereas the Trait Theory proposes that all individuals are predisposed with five traits (Extraversion, Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Neuroticism) which determines our personality. This theory also puts forward that personality is stable and cannot change as it’s biologically determined.
The covariance measures the strength of the linear relationship between two numerical variables (Levine, et al., 2008). The coefficient of correlation measures the relative strength of a linear relationship between two numerical variables (Levine, et al., 2008). The coefficient of correlation indicates the linear relationship between two numerical variables (Levine, et al., 2008).
...theories of nature and nurture as a precursor of personality may enable an individual to obtain a clear perspective of its evolution. However, in the study of personality, it is very important to understand the different theoretical approaches within its realm. It is important for the same reason that not one person is the same and neither are personalities; and for the very same reason why personality theorist’ differ when describing the concept and nature of humanity.
When we are born, over time we grow up and develop a personality. For each person, our personalities differentiate between one another which presents a wide variety of individuals. According to psychology, there are different factors that make up who we are. Today, I will be talking about the four major theories of personality (Psychodynamic, five-factor model, humanistic, and social-cognitive).
The coefficient of variation is essentially a comparison of standard deviation to its mean. The coefficient of variation can be useful in computing standard deviation that have been computed from data with different means.
