Dominant Modes In his autobiography, When Breath Becomes Air, Paul Kalanithi used detailed description paired with illness narration in order to account for his life and those around him through his journey to finding what made his life meaningful. The ultimate goal of his autobiography was to look back on his own life and search for its purpose when diagnosed with incurable cancer. He realized how he defines himself, and his cancer stole pieces of himself he would never get back. Without the raw nature of a personal narrative, the purpose Kalanithi hoped to convey would be lost through second-hand documentation and the void of authenticity.
