Making a decision on having an abortion is very hard. It is even more difficult when the person by your side wants you to have an abortion. In the short story, Hills like white elephants, Jig gets persuaded into abortion without making her own decision. Jig needs to know the ins and outs about abortion before making a decision. Jig has to have a lot of knowledge about abortion before making a decision. Many people can relate to the struggle Jig goes through in the story, because we tend to make decisions based on others happiness. Jig’s mate is unhappy with the pregnancy and wants Jig to get an abortion. We do not hear what the mother of the baby really wants. Even though it is a delicate topic, it is well aware and popular. Deciding on having an abortion is a huge decision and should be looked over many times before falling on one decision. Before Jig makes a life changing decision, it is very important that she gets the right amount of information that will help her make choice carefully and educationally.
First thing Jig needs to understand is where abortion came from, and what it means. Abortion is considered to be a very controversial issue. It is commonly known as the termination of a pregnancy. However, if the pregnancy ends itself it is known as a “miscarriage”. Sadistically, this procedure of abortion is increasing popularity faster than ever amongst women of this generation. Abortion is usually carried out when a child is accidentally conceived. However, this also effected by health, lack of family income, rapes and age. Lastly, Jig has another option if she doesn’t want to keep the child and also kill it. She can go for adoption. There are many places that offer you to give your baby to them. Jig is not going to go through gilt and regret all her life, and will know that she did not kill a baby. If she wants, she can also see how her child is going all through life. She will also experience delivering a baby, and will know that her child is at a better place.
To go for abortion or adoption or keeping the baby, the decision in the end totally depends on Jig and Jig only. If Jig is uncertain that she might not be able to take care of her future child, an option for her is adoption. This way they will be internally satisfied that their child is happy and living a perfect life. With having the knowledge about abortion, Jig will make the best decision concerning her and her life.
