SCHR is an organisation that provides care for severely ill or injured children from across NSW and Australia. It is part of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN) in tandem with another hospital located in Westmead, New South Wales (NSW). The Randwick location specifically provides paediatric and adolescent services such as surgical, cancerous, trauma, HIV/AIDS, congenital abnormalities, disabilities, heart disease and respiratory disorder treatments (SCHN, 2017). The SCHN have a mission, as specifically mentioned in their 2013-17 Strategic Planning Process, that intends to utilise clinical care, research, education and advocacy to improve the health of children (Steele and McGinness, 2013). Social workers specific purpose within this origination is to provide families with emotional support throughout their time as patients within the hospital. This support can include, but is not limited to, the following methods; crisis counselling, individual therapy, and informing patients of their rights regarding difficult decision they may have to make surrounding their circumstances. Through crisis counselling the social worker has to conduct crisis and bio-psychosocial assessment, as identified by Roberts’ Seven Stage Crisis Intervention Model, in order to form the basis for how they can best adhere their patients needs (Roberts, 2007). This methodology is practice widely across the social work department as identified by the social worker interviewed below and is effective in furthering the establishment of an open worker/client relation, which is essential for social worker to be able to provide their best care to patients. Furthermore, additional usage of counselling provides families with a platform for open communication, which allows them to identify any concerns and issues they may have. Counselling is a common social work practiced used and is effectively implemented in this organisation. The notable funding strengths of this organisation allow for greater improvements to be made through careful and strategic planning. However, there is a limited awareness of the improvements that could be made directly to the social work department and this potentially stems from the lack of awareness of the importance of social work within a health care context. There is potential to improve the social work department within this organisation through increases in staff numbers, due to the large number of patients the hospital cares for, to allow greater inter-personal relationships to be formed between patients and social workers, which could lead to improved implementation of social work services. Furthermore, the contrast between social workers obligations and those of other health professionals (i.e. doctors/nurses) is a notable disparity that can impact the social work practice. Unfortunately this can be seen as due to a lack of awareness on the importance of social work in a hospitalised setting and how the patients, as well as their families, face additional trauma outside of their physical injuries that need to be address.
