I interviewed one of my classmates about her views towards our criminal justice system. She believes that the system is flawed. In our conversation, she stressed that there's too many young individuals incarcerated. Also, she mentioned the fact that the justice system can be extremely bias against minorities. Furthermore, as the conversation got more in depth I learned she has a few family members that are still dealing with going to court, and one who was incarcerated last summer. Personally, I feel her views were different, because she has an emotional attachment to the topic and she has witnessed dealing with the justice system.
The criminal justice field is made up of many facets. The court system includes many professions which include lawyers, judges, police officers and polygraph examiners. The federal justice system has numerous professions as well. Two highly recognizable organizations in the government criminal justice system are the CIA and the FBI. Two careers of interest worth future investigation are a polygraph examiner and a special agent in the FBI.
Michelle Alexander also brings to attention the hardship that these arrests bring onto people of colour after finishing their sentences. After the release from jail these people are faced with a total isolation from society, they can’t get jobs and therefore are forced into poverty. They are legally discriminated from housing, jobs, education, food stamps etc. Their lives are forever changed. Ex-offenders are constantly facing a legal discrimination upon their release, and Alexander compares this to the legal discrimination during Jim Crow. Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, Captain Sameul Jelsma of Pahoa Police Station has served as a police officer for more than two decades. He is the commander of the station and he oversees the lower Puna district. Before he joined the Hawaii Police Department, he served in the US military. When he was in the army, he decided to come back and serve his own community. He was initially enlisted as a patrol officer but his commitment and hard work rewarded him with promotions as the result of which he became a captain.

Sometimes people want someone that looks like them to be in these positions.This can even have a positive effect on offenders because it might make them say if you can make it being poor and a minority I can do it too. There isn’t just a certain color or nationality that is locked up in American prisons, but there is a diversity of people that is locked up. These diversities of people need to see a diversity in the workforce in the criminal Justice
The criminal justice system is united under one basic law body, in which no racism is present. Personal beliefs and anecdotes prove nothing, the criminal justice system isn’t racist. Although it may seem African Americans are highly discriminated upon in the justice system, there is ample amounts of data to prove otherwise. The racial issues found in the system are due to inner city isolation and common crime patterns involving drugs even if it may seem as if the system is racist.
For instance, creating better prisons would not only decrease the overcrowding and recidivism rate but would also equalize the application of human rights and humanize offenders. Putting a face to convicts increases the chance of proper treatment. Five of the ten worst prisons in the world are found in America, and the worst rates of overcrowding are found in the Americas (McGrath, 10/27). In some Scandinavian countries, restructuring of prisons has produced a marked decrease in recidivism. The new prisons emphasize rehabilitation over punishment and concentrate their faculties on human rights, rather than oppression. These countries have seen a twenty-five percent decrease in repeat offender rates. Rather than serving as a years-long punitive state, these prisons release detainees with a better understanding of and respect for human life and the social customs protecting it (McGrath, 10/27). Many Western European nations also appoint judges and public prosecutors, rather than holding elections. The American process of elections drives candidates to seek public approval rather than administering justice. Public opinion often is polarized in favor of harsher sentences for minority offenders, and popularly elected officials will pander to voters (McGrath, 10/27). The US prisons are filled with mostly African Americans and Latinos. This started because the large amount of African Americans in prison after the Civil War because of the Black Codes. The people of the US thought and still do think that just because more African Americans are in prison that something is wrong with them. I have heard many arguments from mental issues to genetics. Neither of them are the case, clearly African Americans are being targeted and it is not easy to end the cycle. I want to explain a fictional story about a boy named Jamal who is like many young Inter-City kid. Jamal an African American lives in a single parent home with two younger brothers in neighborhood full of gangs and circulation of drugs. Jamal is a drug free and not gang affiliated he also is a straight a student and is headed to high school the next year. He is ten times more likely to go to prison then a white a student who is a drug and gang affiliated with poor grades. Jamal and the white student can both have no father in their homes and even live in the same neighborhood but the probability of Jamal going to jail is just much higher. The United States has been known world-wide for entertainment surrounding the police, judiciary, and incarceration systems. These shows and movies are filled with violence - and at the end, the “bad guys” (criminals) always lose to the “good guys” (law enforcement). But this poses the question: should criminals be treated badly due to their offenses? It is common sense that when one breaks the law, they should be punished for it. However, do the crimes committed take away the humanity of the convict? Prisoners are still citizens of the United States and therefore have rights. America’s Incarceration System continues to fail to meet the needs and rights of prisoners due to issues such as overcrowding, lack of health care, discrimination, and sexual assault.
Racism within the Justice System. Living in the twenty first century, Americans would like to believe that they are living in the land of the free, where anyone and everyone can live an ordinary life without worrying that they will be arrested on the spot for doing absolutely nothing. The sad truth, with the evidence to prove it, is that this American Dream is not all that it appears to be. It has been corrupted and continues to be, everyday, by the racism that is in the criminal justice system of America. Many of the policies today were established in direct response to polarizing events and generational shifts in ideology. In order to maintain public safety and punish those who break these laws, law enforcement officers arrest offenders and a judge or a group of the law offender’s peers judge their innocence. An ethical problem that exists in the field of criminal justice is the incarceration of juveniles. While juvenile incarceration has been decreasing over the past decade, it is still an ethical dilemma that many criminal justice professionals will come across. Juveniles’ brains are not fully developed, incarceration is used when not appropriate to fit the problem, and some populations are over-represented in the criminal justice system.
In Intro to Criminal Justice class, I had the opportunity to learn about the Criminal Justice System more thoroughly. I learned that there are three components that make up the Criminal Justice System such as the courts, law enforcement, and corrections. Each component has its own role in making sure the the Criminal Justice System is functioning properly. If one of these components are not efficient the Criminal Justice system will not be as strong as it could be.
