Recommended: School uniforms and the right of choice

Covering Up Restrictions on student’s clothing is a popular topic of controversy. Some believe authoritative figures involved in children’s lives, such as parents and school administrators, should have the ability and the right to limit student’s clothing choices. Others believe students should be allowed to make their own clothing decisions without the influence or direction of authority.
Connotatively, the word modesty leads multitudes to think oppressive and self-shaming thoughts. However, covering up creates freedom of individuality (Adiar). Without the pressure to wear revealing and fashion forward clothes, girls and boys alike would be able to show their personal take on styles more effectively. Modesty may also reduce bullying. The biggest argument against modesty is the restriction of freedom. Even though dress codes and “strict” parenting may include boundaries, they are set in place for the betterment of children and society as a whole. Some argue that school regulations on clothing promotes conformity over individuality (ProCon). However, modestly dressed students are able to dress expressively without offending or distracting other students. Most people opposed to school dress codes do not appreciate the limitations put on students as it interferes with our Constitutional freedom of expression (School Dress Codes). Nevertheless, standard school dress codes can restrict several things without violating any rights or freedoms of students. School dress codes may limit gang related clothing, suggestive t-shirts, the length of shirts, skirts, and pants, clothing that is sexually explicit, clothes promoting indecent drug use, and baggy pants revealing indecent body parts or underwear. They may also have seasonal restrictions, such as no shorts or tank tops in the winter. Contrary to popular belief, schools may not ban any religious wear such as headscarves, rosaries and cross necklaces, tribal clothing of any kind, non US flag necklaces, or student’s hair length (School Dress Codes).
