School Dress Codes Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. The first dress code was sent to be decided by the Supreme Court. The problem was that students were protesting against the Vietnam War by wearing black wristbands which educators thought to be disrupting to the classroom. However, these codes help prepare kids for the real world where they must dress to the appropriate attire. Research shows, that students learn better when there is a dress code in place and the staff says many students are less worried about what they are wearing and focusing more on completing their school work. Dress codes also introduce a healthy learning environment for kids and help reduce violence. Other statistics have changes as well. Attendance has gone up and gang violence has gone down. Some students are feeling uncomfortable and are saying students are going to have to start dressing the same due to the dress code. High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity.

Imagine this: a student is walking down the hallway when suddenly, he gasps and exclaims to a girl, “I can see your see your shoulder! Cover it up!” This situation may sound ridiculous, but this is the basis for one of the dress code rules at our school. As the school is considering making a change to the dress code, I advise the school to get rid of the no-bra strap/no visible shoulder rule. I think it wrong that schools have considered bra straps, a common and ordinary garment, as distracting and indecent. Visible bra straps should be allowed because it is not logical to force girls to miss class in order to change into more “appropriate” clothes, wearing a bra is completely normal, and saying that bra straps are wrong hurts girls’ self-esteem.

A student’s high school career should be about discovering new knowledge and discovering who you are, not about what you wore. One rule that I would change at Ralston is the dress code policy. The dress code policy limits a student's right to express themselves, be comfortable in what they wear and ultimately put a higher value some students over others.
Picture this. It's the first day of school back from summer and you're wearing your nice, new clothes you got from your Nana. Then you run off to go say hi to your best friends in the whole entire world, (btw you're five) then you see your friends in some weird looking matching clothes. Then you look around and everyone else is wearing the same thing. How would you feel? If I were you the first question I would ask myself is “can I afford these uniforms?”Another question I would ask myself is that “what would other people think of me?” or “will I look weird when I wear it?” Also “how will these uniforms benefit ME?”
