As a native Austinite, I carry a native’s passion for Austin’s soul. My father’s career was with PageSoutherlandPage (PSP) and my mother worked with Austin Custom Records and Austex Printing. Our family prized and modeled a pioneering and creative mindset, built on a foundation of tolerance and inclusiveness—in other words, the Austin soul. As an example, we were one of the first families to build in Westlake in 1965 and my mother named our street, since our home established its existence. Cutting-edge architect A.D. Stenger built on the lot next to us, and I religiously donated my 25¢/week allowance to the Westlake High School building fund, believing this meant I would soon own a building. Years later, I learned how to drive on Mopac—since there was so little traffic on it—and flew in and...

...gly in the power of story over sound bites, and have shared some of the story of who I am, how I have used my talents to achieve, and what I want to achieve next—and on whose behalf. I read that Brewster primarily views himself as a writer, so I hope he will find value and enjoyment in my choice to introduce all the levels of my qualifications using story. Above all, I hope I have conveyed my passion for your endeavor, since passion is the secret sauce in all sustainable success.
I attended today’s City Council meeting to listen in on the discussion around the Yingli (and Facebook) proposal, and that small simple step in the direction of your project’s space left me feeling deeply invigorated and enthused. Needless to say, I look forward to the next step of a
personal meeting, with a sense of eagerness to begin that is palpable.
Most sincerely,
My name is Logan Thorp and I am currently a second year Doctor of Physical Therapy student at Southwest Baptist University. I am writing you in advocacy for the Dry Needling intervention that is currently in the scope of practice issues for Physical Therapists.
The city of Denison was named in tribute of George Denison, who brought the city into being (“Ancestors and Descendants”). Main Street started off as a wide dusty road filled with horses and buggies that gathered in front of old wooden saloons and business buildings. People dressed in attire of the 1880’s and Main Street was buzzing with people (see attachment 1). While Main Street and the town of Denison became known as a city of hooligans, the later establishment of local government helped put the city into existence (McLeRoy). During the 1880’s Main Street had a few firsts happen. The Security building located on Main Street was the tallest buildings in Texas at the time of its creation, and the Educational Institute was the first free graded public school in Texas (“Denison Texas First”). From 1910 to 1940 many events took place in the downtown, and Denison's Main Street had several well-liked hangouts. A specifically noteworthy establishment was Tony's Palm Garden, one of the most in style hangouts on Main Street. Anthony Giarraputo Sr. was the ingenious owner of the Palm Garden. He made candies, pastries, and he owned one of the first soda fountains in Denison. On ...
In contrast to the negatives of gentrification, some people view gentrification as a the only effective way to “revitalize” low-income urban communities. In the article, “Gentrification: A Positive Good For Communities” Turman situates the piece around the opinion that gentrification is not as awful as the negative connotation surrounding it. Furthermore, he attempts to dispel the negative aspects of gentrification by pointing out how some of them are nonexistent. To accomplish this, Turman exemplifies how gentrification could positively impact neighborhoods like Third Ward (a ‘dangerous’ neighborhood in Houston, Texas).Throughout the article, Turman provides copious examples of how gentrification can positively change urban communities, expressing that “gentrification can produce desirable effects upon a community such as a reduced crime rate, investment in the infrastructure of an area and increased economic activity in neighborhoods which gentrify”. Furthermore, he opportunistically uses the Third Ward as an example, which he describes as “the 15th most dangerous neighborhood in the country” and “synonymous with crime”, as an example of an area that could “need the change that gentrification provides”. Consequently, he argues with
...ws of the city of Austin, but it didn’t show the positive thing that the city has. I strongly believe that Austin has gained the opportunity to keep being the capital of Texas. Its diversity of cultures has shown us that people can get along with each other with no problem. The economic growth had generated great amount of big and small businesses that benefit their citizens. The diversity of little business like radio stations, live performances of music and theater presentations have given the people a new perspective of what art is. Historical museums educate along with the school and universities.
When speaker Brené Brown was about to give a talk, the event coordinator struggled with calling her a “researcher,” saying that people might not want to come because they would think she was “boring and irrelevant.” Instead, she wanted to call her a “storyteller” since she thought Brene´Brown’s story-telling abilities were a highpoint. Brown’s academic insecurity was not satisfied in simply being called a “storyteller.” She decided her qualitative research was, in actuality, collecting stories and concluded, stories, were “data with a soul.” She then embraced the title “Researcher-Story-teller,” which combined her unique abilities (Brown, 2010). Building our own personal brand is a combination of strengths; its “what makes us

The plan to open a music academy to serve the neighborhood’s at-risk youth with an after school and summer music programming also gave the residents a sense of ownership and pride in the effort to rebuild and recontextualize Stax. In addition to several community meetings and outreach initiatives to gain the residents feedback, ideas, and to keep them informed, Ewarton felt hiring people from the neighborhood to help rebuild Stax was paramount. Not only in the pride the community will take in resurrecting a landmark, but in the dignity of their neighborhood as a whole. Deanie Parker recalls the success of hiring members of the community.
This state is full of more cities besides just Los Angeles and San Francisco, for example, my city Richmond, California. I wasn’t born there, but I have lived there most of my life, and there is a certain appeal is there, but its not the stereotypical beauty you see in any infomercial. This city isn’t celebrated nor is it world recognized for its accomplishments, but it is a small city with hidden treasure. The hidden treasure are the success stories that the community does not expect, and that can create a sense of empowerment for everyone around us. That empowerment is something that should be seen nationally, especially since Richmond is not the only impoverished city in
Austin, Texas, known for its vibrant music scene, tech industry, and unique cultural identity, has not been immune to the effects of gentrification. This transformation has brought both opportunities and challenges, sparking debates about socioeconomic inequality, cultural preservation, and community displacement. Historical Development in Austin, Texas To understand gentrification in Austin, it's crucial to examine its historical context. The city's growth can be traced back to the mid-19th century, primarily driven by industries like agriculture and government.

The field on the corner of our road blew with unmown grass, pale yellow in the midst of summer. It greeted you as you drove up the road, into the suburb with old weatherboard houses converted to shops. On windy days, the grass billowed across the field in mesmerizing patterns, creating a spectacle for those walking past. Sometimes there were black cows scattered amongst it. It sat next to the creek with old gum trees leaning over; a lovely patch of countryside. Five years ago, they dug up the field to build a block of houses. The field became precise lines of concrete and trees planted in straight rows. The houses were made of brick and were placed with no regard for privacy. The drive into the suburb is changed, now the ideal suburban aesthetic
