“Good luck, Honey!” my husband told me as I was leaving home on a Sunday night. This was unusual for me, but that was the only time I could find to do this. I was dressed in all black and wearing a cap with a big bib to hide my face. I was on a mission. Once I pulled into the CVS parking lot, I did a double check to make sure I had everything that I needed. I got out the car and dropped my keys. As I was picking up my keys, I dropped my bag. I was a little edgy. I had to tell myself to calm down; it’s just couponing. I walked into the CVS lugging a big tan bag. I grabbed a cart and plopped my big bag in it. I was already aware that couponers had an unsavory reputation. I took a couponing class taught by my cousin, Tecora. My cousin is the queen of couponing. She has a stockpile that would put my current one to shame. Tecora let me know how some couponers gave us a bad name. Clearing the shelves is something couponers do, that people don’t like. Workers hate to have to restock the self and customers hate coming to a store and the store is out of what they need. Cashiers also hate scanning coupons, for some reason. I don’t understand why they hate it, it’s not a difficult task. Of course, they hate when you hold their line up, but I hate being the one to hold a line up too. Tecora told me to be aware of my actions as a couponer because it affects all couponers. She showed me how to coupon the right way. Nevertheless, the cashier proceeded to scan my CVS card and then scanned all my items. She scanned my items one at a time. I was so anxious; I tried so hard to contain myself. “Your total is $101.25,” she said. Then I laid all my coupons out on the counter, like I was playing blackjack at the casino. She sighed in frustration. I didn’t care. I watched intensely to make sure she scanned each coupon. The coupons were like money to me. “Your total is $11.03,” she said
