“The cost of college education today is so high that many young people are giving up their dream of going to college, while many others are graduating deeply in debt” (Sanders). Everyone has the right to dream, and make those dreams come true. Nobody should give up on their dreams due to the fact that they cannot afford a college education. The students who do achieve their dream of going to college spend years after graduating paying for that dream. Fortunately, there are some ways students can lower the cost of college. One of the best things about a scholarship is that it does not leave a student in debt after graduating. This is one of the biggest worries as a college student. Thinking about the future, and all the years it will take to pay off their debt. Leading to distraction and more stress in a student’s life. Another plus to scholarships is that they do not have to be paid back like some other benefits students can receive. Scholarships sound like the best thing ever created but they are not easy to obtain. Scholarships must be earned, they are not handed out to random students around school. They are an accomplishment and a reward to students who do good in high school. A student can receive a scholarship by various ways, like having good grades, or being good at a sport. Scholarships can be for any student, of course if they meet the requirements for them. For instance, “Scholarships for students are not necessarily only for the students who are in need. FAFSA stands for “Free application for federal student aid.” What FAFSA is, is an application students must fill out every year in order to determine if they are eligible for student financial aid. FAFSA is beneficial for those students who do not have the money to go straight to college after high school but still want to. FAFSA makes it happen. It has helped many students and their families financially. FAFSA is similar to scholarships, although they have very important differences. FAFSA does not have to be earned. The performance in high school does not affect the decision of students receiving FAFSA, although a high school diploma is required. Although, like scholarships students must maintain good grades in every class or FAFSA could be taken away from them. Anyone can fill out the application for financial aid, but this does not mean that everyone will be eligible for it. A student and their family must make a certain amount of money to be accepted for FAFSA. Also, FAFSA does not have to be paid back, unless a loan is given. Loans do in fact have to be paid back. To illustrate, “Grants are typically need-based awards that do not have to be paid back” (Flynn). FAFSA gives students money to pay for tuition, textbooks, and anything required for school.
