Two-thirds of released prisoners are rearrested within three years of release. One and a half million children have a parent in prison. Four million citizens have lost their right to vote. Men and women enter U.S. prisons with limited marketable work experience, low levels of educational or vocational skills, and many health-related issues, ranging from mental health needs to substance abuse histories and high rates of communicable diseases. Once released from prison, he or she is deemed a felon. Losing the right to vote, not being able to serve on a jury, and inability to enforce his or her second amendment is just a few of the disadvantages of serving time, but this is just the textbook interpretation. There is no much more that is at stake when you step foot behind bars. Once a person gains their freedom the better question to ask is what wasn’t taken form them? Their job if there was one in the first place, their children, their family, and most importantly the part of the person that made them a member of society.
The cells in which inmates are kept are very small; they have a toilet, a shelf, a desk and a bed that contains a thin mattress (Shalev, 2011). Inmates are not allowed to have physical contact with their visitors. In fact, they cannot even see them face to face in certain facilities. Inmates cannot participate in any work activities, and only if the facility offers it can they receive small amounts of educational programs on a television on a secured circuit (Shalev, 2011). The only time inmates are permitted to leave their cell is to exercise inside a caged enclosure for about an hour a day. Most cells contain a solid door with a single slot so that inmates may be cuffed or received their meals. Also, depending on the facility they may have a small rectangular window in their cell that is extremely small. Why are prisoners finding it hard to live outside the prison system? After inmates are released from prison, they need to learn how to re enter back into society, but some have no family support or anywhere to go, so they commit another crime and go right back to jail, a phenomenon called recidivism. “Studies show that many offenders tend to end up back in prison when they can’t find employment or if they have strained family” (Chamberlain). Having support is great after being released but not all support is the right support but there are many other options. In fact, there are halfway houses, gate money, the power of an education, and even some ways to find their way back into society while in prison.
Correctional ideologies have contributed greatly to the present correctional trends in the United States. With all of the correctional ideologies contributing in some way, some greater than others, the United States corrections has seen many problems. One such problem is the steady increase in incarceration rates. In result, the prison facilities have become overcrowded and hard to manage. As Dawe from New York City’s Department of Corrections said, “We are so understaffed and so overcrowded across our prisons, it’s miraculous that we can handle it,”(New Week Global, 2014). In fact, according to the American Federation of Government Employees, Federally-operated facilities have grown by 41% while correctional workers have only increased by 19% (New Week Global, 2014). The increase in the prison population rates is due to five contributing factors: (1) increased arrests and more likely incarceration, (2) tougher sentencing, (3) prison construction, (4) the war on drugs, and (5) state and local politics.
It is in these communities that the drugs, violence, and values that constitute everyday life in prison are eliminated, and elements of prison that generally ‘rebuke rehabilitation” (Inciardi, Martin, Surratt) disappear. They supply treatment, as well as aftercare, and reentry services to provide continuous support for inmates once they are released in hopes of diminishing situations of relapse. Similar to therapeutic communities in the general public, the primary staff that facilitates these programs are “recovering addicts” that participated and were rehabilitated by the therapeutic communities themselves. This allows for inmates to not only feel equal amongst one another, but enables them to form bonds and develop a trust towards others; which has shown to assist in the inmate's desire to not continue their old behaviors. Therapeutic communities perceive drug abuse in individuals as a “symptom” of a larger issue. Opposed to the mentality that depicts drug usage as being the primary reason for why ‘they did what they did’, as current prison programs have maintained. The overall goal of prison based therapeutic communities is to identify negative patterns of “behavior, thinking, and feeling” in inmates that predispose drug abuse, and provide methods to
Longitudinal research has been conducted comparing the rate of violence in male and female prisons. It is important to do research on this topic because it does not only lead to the conclusion of where is violence prevalent, but focuses on other aspects as well. It focuses on the psychological, social, and sexual side of the inmate. This topic does not only focus on who has the highest rates of violence, but why does that sex have a higher rate. This topic looks deeper at the differences between male and female inmates and what causes them to have high rates of violence. Most people would say that male prisons have a higher rate of violence due to biological reasons. People tend to think that males are more aggressive therefore violence is prevalent in male prisons, yet there is a lot more to this idea.
