Cool Teens: Pseudomature Behavior

Cool teens are widely idealized in the media, movies, and books where teens seek popularity and acceptance from their peers by trying to act older than their age. The definition of “cool” defined as pseudomature behavior is described as teens trying to act more grown up than their chronological, or emotional age. A recent study suggests that while acting grown-up may be a successful short-term strategy to achieve peer acceptance and popularity, the long-term consequences of this effort can bring problems in late adolescence and even adulthood. In particular, the study notes that pseudomature behavior was actually a better predictor of future substance abuse than drug and alcohol use in middle school. The teens attended public school in suburban and urban areas in the southeastern United States and were from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Dr. Joseph Allen, the professor who led the study, and his colleagues found three popularity seeking behaviors that were characterized by pseudomaturity: displays of minor delinquency (sneaking into movies without paying), early romantic behaviors (kissing), and seeking out friends who were physically attractive. At 13, these risk-taking and socially precocious teens were viewed by classmates with envy and admiration. But by 15, according to the study, their social statuses plummeted. Their early rush into “adulthood” has set them up for trouble.
