For some getting their drivers license is a dream come true, but it could easily turn into a nightmare. For many, it`s a dream that is never woken up from. The use of technology has grown steadily over the years, distracting us from things that are important, such as where we`re going. Texting while driving is one of the biggest problems in the United States. Not only are drivers putting themselves in danger, but they’re putting passengers and other drivers on the road in dangerous situations. This is exactly why laws should be created and enforced for distracted driving. Texting while driving causes 1,600,000 accidents per year, 333,000 injuries per year, and 11 teen deaths every day (“DWI” 1). Driving while intoxicated seems like the most significant cause of accidents, while on the road, however, texting while driving is much more hazardous. Many people may text while driving thinking that nothing will happen to them or that they can multitask correctly. The truth is they’re just too stubborn to accept that texting while driving is dangerous. Some drivers may just have to learn their lesson when it`s too late and they`re the cause of an accident, unfortunately. Even if a driver reads the statistics of texting while driving, he or she will find a way to justify doing so. 77% of young adults are very or somewhat confident that they can safely text while driving and 55% of young drivers say that it’s easy to text while driving (“DWI” 1). These statistics are heartbreaking and unfortunate, because so many drivers don’t value the lives of passengers in their car or drivers on the road.
