Depending on how devoted an individual is to their faith, happiness will vary among them. Confucianism is a philosophy in which social harmony, and importance of education and family are enforced. In Confucianism, it is emphasized by Confucius that education leads to a better individual. It is known that he “prescribed a broad liberal arts education emphasizing literature, language, history, philosophy, and ethics” (Strayer, p.120). Confucius did so because he believed humans have the ability to improve. Education was essential in happiness, and commitment to religious beliefs allowed education in Confucianism to increases happiness. Behavior was also key in happiness, especially in Confucianism. If appropriate behavior was significant, then happiness had to have been obtained through performing accordingly to the Confucian philosophy. According to Confucius, social harmony was achieved through filial piety, which consisted of unequal relationships. Happiness could be obtained by living by the rules of the relationships “if the superior party behaved with benevolence for others, then the inferior party would be motivated to respond with deference and obedience (Strayer, 171). Harmony is prevailed by devotion to the Confucian belief. In addition, “for the superior person or gentlemen in Confucian terms, this process of improvement involved serious personal reflection and a willingness to strive continuously to perform his moral character” (Strayer, 169). In this philosophy, being devoted to it then allows for motivation to be present in order to reach the expectations of the faith. When motivated and you succeed, happiness is obtained. It was believed that “the universe had a moral character in which human beings should align themselves” (Strayer, 172).
