Rita Brown once said that “The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself.” Conformity brings about a choice to repress your own views to “fit in” with other people. This choice can bring danger to other people and put lives in jeopardy. Those who make the decision to not conform to society make the most out of their situation. In reading, The Crucible, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street and the article on the Red Scare, I have realized the right decision in life. I believe not conforming and standing up for what you believe in is right the right choice.

The red scare was a fear of the spreading of communism that began in the 1920s. “America’s capitalist ideal of conformity became the norm and anything looking to oppose this would be considered antisocial, dangerous, or even treasonous”(Sauers 1). This was what became the belief of most Americans who conformed to the typical views. A man named Joseph McCarthy used this belief of the people to convict “communists”. He told lies and tricked many people to back him in accusing these people. Many people lost their jobs and many people’s lives were ruined. They say people are happier when they give into a groups values. While this may be true in some instances, most times conformity leads to people's views being repressed. Conformity makes the worst of a group come out. In Monsters Due on Maple Street, there was a bad situation with all the power going out. The “mob” of the neighborhood was looking for someone to blame. They came together and things got violent. The men of the mob went over to the new neighbors house. When they came back one of the women said, “You killed him, Charlie. You shot him dead”(Monsters, act 2). The “mob mentality” got to his head. Charlie thought the new neighbor was to blame for the power outage. This shows how people conforming to a group without knowing what they are getting into can influence thinking.
