Functionalism and theories around the principle of functionalist perspectives view parts of society as how they contribute to the overall stability of society as a whole. Each part of society serves as a purpose towards how each culture's functions in maintaining balance throughout generations. There are also factors of society that functionalist theorists reflect upon and that is the emphasis on social order, social stability, and shared public values. If there are dysfunctional characteristics that are not addressed within a society, it will affect other parts of society negatively. Conflict theory is the focus on how power and its ability to be manipulated or influenced on society provides social order for a population. Highlighted by conflict theorists, through power and coercion a society is able to maintain stability and social order. This type of perspective on society focuses much on the idea of hierarchy within a civilization. This refers to how individuals who are perceived as powerful use their power, resources, and/or wealth to exercise authority and control over those who are lower in the society. The biggest focuses that many conflict theorists have to view is the idea of social inequality within various parts of society. This inequality occurs because of groups or individuals having more resources than others and thus are able to exercise more power and control. Through certain parts of society such as class, race, ethnicity, and gender spawn various cases of inequality to affect society. The conflict theory that is explained on page 191 of Chapter 8 contradicts functionalist views. From the perspective of the conflict theory, through conflict and coercion society is held together. Through the idea of social class there are hierarchies that viewed and accepted within society. As I stated before, it is through these hierarchies that inequality breeds within society. Although functionalists viewed inequality as an opportunity and motivation for social growth in individual responsibility, conflict theorist view it as unfair and unjust towards society. Since there are individuals who are higher in prestige than others, this allows for the elite to have more power and control over others.
