Could you fight til death over someone poaching on your land? In the short story “The Interlopers” by Saki this exact same scenario happens. Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym’s families fight over a thin strip of woods, both families think they owned this landed. Georg and Ulrich both grabbed their rifles and men and went to go fight over the land they thought was theirs. The two men met under a beech tree, with both rifles in hand, and were about to start shooting when the tree fell on both of them. Conflict in a story helps to make the story more interesting and eventful, this story has a lot of conflict between Georg and Ulrich. ‘A fierce shriek of the storm had been answered by a splitting crash over their heads, and ere they could leap aside a mass of falling beech tree had thundered down on them.’ The conflict of the beech tree falling down on them, helps create excitement which in return makes you wanna keep reading. By adding conflict the author makes the story more interesting to read, and makes more and more readers want to read it. The last element used in the short story is suspense. One suspense technique the author uses is repeating things. When both Georg and Ulrich are stuck under the tree, they try to call for help. Ulrich sees the wolves but stays silent for a while. Georg asks impatiently, “‘ Are they your men?”’ and then immediately after asks the same thing again. By repeating the question by georg the author creates suspense and in return makes his story more fun to read. In conclusion, the short story “ The Interlopers” by Saki continues to be popular because he has a good theme, conflict and suspense.
