Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ( ). Although there is conflict around his area, Martin believed that he shouldn’t try to get rid of conflict with conflict, so he instead used compromise. Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t fight with others about the conflicts of the Civil Rights Movement, he persuaded them with peaceful protests. Martin Luther King Jr. promoted the use of non-violent compromise to solve cultural conflicts, leading to his assassination and increased violent conflicts. Martin was standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel at 6:00 p.m. on April 4, 1968, talking to Kyles, his friend. When Kyles left to get his car, he heard a loud sound. When Kyles spun around, he saw Martin lying on the balcony in a pool of blood (Posner 30). Martin was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital where a team of doctors made an effort to save him. At 7:05, Martin was announced dead (Posner 35). News of his death was followed by grief and rage. Some people decided to honor Martin by leading marches, but others decided to cause more conflict in riots (“Death”). Dr. King still lived a longer life than he expected. Dr. King believed that hate could not drive out hate, and only love could do that, so he used compromise to drive out the hate and violence of conflict. Although Dr. King loved the idea of a free nation, others hated him. Martin used compromise to solve his problems instead of conflict, and it led him far in his life. While using his compromise throughout his life, by the time of his death, cultural conflicts arose, but in the end, they compromised. In the present, people realize that Martin Luther King Jr. made a huge impact in our lives. Now, African-Americans and the black community have the same rights at others without conflict. There are still some racists in the world and there always will be, but Martin Luther King Jr. helped make America the free country it is
