COMPUTER NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR A computer network (the "network") is the connection of at least two or more computers for the purpose of sharing data and resources. These resources can include printers, Internet access, file sharing, and electronic mail ("e-mail"). In today's technological environment, most companies and businesses have some kind of network used on a daily basis. Thus, it is imperative to day-to-day operations that networks run smoothly. Companies employ at least one person to watch over this important aspect of any company's business. This person is generally called a network administrator. This position carries significant responsibilities since most companies are subject to significant operating losses should problems arise with its network. JOB SKILLS AND RESPONSIBLITIES Once hired, a network administrator will be expected to perform certain networking tasks usually requiring considerable work hours. Tasks generally include maintaining the network hardware and cabling, installing software updates and fixes, and performing backups of important data (Career direction, p. 28). Since network failures are inevitable, a network administrator is always "on-call." When a problem arises, the network administrator is the person who is called first regardless of time or schedule. Since a network administrator must be accessible at all times, owning a cell phone or pager is a job necessity and is usually provided to the network administrator by the company. The network is used during the normal business hours by other employees; therefore, most activities involving data backups and software and file updates are usually performed after normal business hours. Many of these types of activities take longer than expected resulting in long hours of overtime for the network administrator and other computer and information system personnel. Depending on the nature and size of the company, the company may employ only one person or a team of individuals to monitor a network or a series of networks. Thus, most network administrators must be able to work in a team environment. Additionally since network administrators serve as a support role in a company, a network administrator must be able to communicate ideas to the other employees that may have minimal computer knowledge and experience. Additionally, network administrators must be generally knowledgeable of the company's overall business strategies and operational units so that the network adequately supports these functions. TRAINING AND EDUCATION A position as a network administrator is not an entry-level position.
Some of technology they will need to decide on will be whether to install a server computer, which is a computer on a network that performs important network functions for client computers, such as serving up Web pages, storing data, and storing the network operating system (and hence controlling the network). Server software such as Microsoft Windows Server, Linux, and Novell Open Enterprise Server are the most widely used network operating systems. As well the network operating system (NOS) routes, manages communications on the network, and coordinates network resources. It can reside on every computer in the network, or it can reside primarily on a dedicated server computer for all the applications on the network. In considering how their workers will communicate with each other in...
Don’t hesitate to bring in experts to make sure your network is configured properly. Correct assessment, however the lesson doesn’t factor in when to bring in an expert. Despite an over-reliance on technology, there needs to be a timeframe for this expert and how their analysis will support overall technological requirements.
...anization cannot ensure who use telecommuter computers and what happen in remote location. It's also too difficult to ensure telecommuter follows the Non-Disclosure Agreement. There is a way that IT department can use to prevent this from happening. They can control the remote computer settings, and monitoring employee perform on the computer. The deep Freze program can be used to prevent telecommuter to change computer settings. Other than that, keystroke recorder can monitor activity telecommuter so that they engaged with the company work. The last categories of technical support is communication and logistical support. For the communication, IT department responsible to provide support for telecommuters by operating communication and groupware tools for business such as e-mail, instant messaging, and chat room that provide means of communication.
Network Security is the protection of the computer’s network though out the entire infrastructure. It can protect very important information and computer files to help prevent theft, spyware, malware, viruses, and more. Depending on if you have a public or private network, can determine what type of security settings you need for your network. All people are different on what they want to have secured or not, but most people do not know how to prevent people or things from getting in their network. “You must have a general understanding of security terminology and specifications as it relates to configuring hardware and software systems.”(Roberts, Richard M. 599). That quote states that by knowing and understanding security terms and specifics, you can

Network security can be used under many different scenarios. For example, it can be used to keep company servers protected from the different departments. When putting access level restrictions on each department like HR and Engineering, you can control what they can and can't have access to. You wouldn't want someone from Engineering to see everyone's personal information. In another example, network security is used to protect the money you have at your bank. More and more things are being tracked on computers, it's essential to understand how to protect it from getting into the wrong hands.
Local Area Networks also called LANs have been a major player in industrialization of computers. In the past 20 or so years the worlds industry has be invaded with new computer technology. It has made such an impact on the way we do business that it has become essential with an ever-growing need for improvement. LANs give an employer the ability to share information between computers with a simple relatively inexpensive system of network cards and software. It also lets the user or users share hardware such as Printers and scanners. The speed of access between the computers is lighting fast because the data has a short distance to cover. In most cases a LAN only occupies one or a group of buildings located next to each other. For larger area need there are several other types of networks such as the Internet.
...vantage of the overall network design and implement usable subnets with virtual local area networks. Use encryption and encapsulation to secure communications of public segments to enable extranets and cross-Internet company traffic. Use items such as intrusion detection systems and firewalls to keep unauthorized users out and monitor activity. Taken together, these pieces can make a secure network that is efficient, manageable, and effective.
Corporate Networks in organisations can be complex structures that “requires a great deal of attention” (Clemm 2007). Even small companies can have quite complex networks that are a considerable investment to the business. The notion that corporate network management is a cost to a business rather than a continual beneficial investment is a naive assumption that requires further investigation to the benefits that network management brings. Clemm (Clemm 2007) states in his text that the ultimate goal of network management “is to reduce and minimize total cost of ownership”, improving operational efficiency and lowering cost. Clemm (Clemm 2007) also notes that “Network Management is not just related to cost and quality”, which will be an continual concept presented throughout the report. The report will address key issues with corporate network management and ultimately argue and justify that corporate network management must be seen as a positive benefit to the business and not as a continual expense. The supporting articles will also provide sound evidence that networking is crucial to a business’s processes and production which can be seen from the OpenSSL Heartbleed Security vulnerability fiasco (Nieva 2014) or the QANTAS Amadeus system failure (Heasley 2012).
Network management planning and security planning involves identifying the best and most appropriate systems and hardware that the firm can use to better manage network and plan security systems. Therefore, the management required me to examine the best software and hardware systems in the market place that the company can adopt to enable it to manage the network and security. The management required me to advice on the implementation procedure of various plans that are going to be adopted. My responsibility also involved finding out or predicting the impact of the plan on the future operations. They required me to evaluate the challenges the company might face while adopting the changes in the network management plan and security plans.
Probably the most common thought of career position within the information technology arena that garners the most OS-centric job description specifics is that of the system administrator or network administrator.
