Comparing The American Civil War And The Crimean War

It was a classic example of a break down in communication and diplomacy. There was no bad guy in world war one, only unintended victims. Great Britain and France were the two most powerful and prestigious countries in the world during 1914. Austria, the Ottoman Empire and Russia were not what they had been a hundred years in the past, and Germany, technically a new nation, was just coming into it's own. It was also an awkward time in history. Never before had people been able to kill each other as successfully as we could in 1914. You could see a small amount of this in the mid to late 1800's, with the American Civil War, and The Crimean War. Both had times where there was a frontal assault on a fixed position, and each time it was disastrous.
