Comparing Lord Of The Flies And The Lovely Bones

Unfair losses

Children are born innocent. Their vision of the world somehow becomes tainted through the experiences they live. In both novels, Lord of the Flies by William Golding and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, some characters unfortunately lose their innnocence through devastating life events. Unexpecteed deaths, childhood memories torn apart and a loss of normalcy in their lives all equally contribute to their loss of innocence. No matter the circumstances, it is impossible to regain what has been lost.

In The Lovely Bones, a young girl named Susie, the main character of the novel, is a very curious girl. She was baited in a room underground where her life was taken away. She was stabbed to death. Susie explains "He brought back a knife, unsheathed, it smiled at me, curving up in a grin" (Sebold 15). Mr. Harvey, Susie's murderer, had killed more than one young girl. He killed a waitress along with a bunch of other girls. Susie meets these girls in heaven and reveals all their names. "I stood in heaven. I called their names: " (Sebold 181). All these girls lost everything.

When they first realized they were stranded on the island, they thought it was all fun and games. They established rules to keep everything in order. After a while, they betrayed the rules. The children's perspective on life will never be the same for the reason that they lost their dignity towards eachother and became crazy. "'We may stay here till we die.' With that word...." When your growing up, there are adults who guide you down the right path. When the boys get stranded, they no longer have that guidance.Their to young to take over big responsibility's.
