New Criticism is described to focus on values on the individual’s work’s meaning. This approach which is a close analytic reading of the text, is the approach I will be using. I chose to analyze both stories Life of a sensuous women and Hedda Gabbler. I will apply these texts to compare/contrast in terms of character and how it affects the themes in the story. Character are one of the important factor in making a story, without character a story could not exist. In both stories, these characters have a major effect on the story. In Life of a Sensuous Woman, there is an aging woman who tells the story behind her life. She was a beautiful woman who love in lust and the quest for love. Then we have Hedda Gabler, a main character in Hedda Gabler. Hedda Gabbler is the daughter of a general who is married to George Tesman. She is an intelligent, beautiful, selfish, dishonest, and an unpredictable woman. Hedda Gabler grew up in an upper- middle class life but now she lives in a lower- middle class life, which she is not used to in life. This class difference between Hedda and George is a collision of expectations of them. Hedda is a person who only looks after herself and does not care about anybody but herself especially individual’s well- being, feelings, and state of mind.
