I believe that Juliet and Maria are so called the “engineers” of their respective lovers. Firstly, because during the setting of both their times (late fifteen-century for Romeo and Juliet and the late 50’s for West Side Story) women were not that prominently empowered to stand up for themselves specially to fight for love or even what they truly believed in. Moreover, strong women like Juliet and Maria are exceptional during their times, most importantly how they broke traditions like choosing a forbidden partner. In both their cases, from the beginning two opposing families who despise each other. Trust in an incomprehensible, yet a relatable component of humanity which we are all too familiar with. It can either be found in the most affectionate of relationships, whilst simultaneously misplaced trust can result in the most inconsolable heartbreaks imaginable. Luckily, in the case of Maria and Juliet’s relationships, their trust made both their loves unconditional and unbreakable. In act 2 scene 2, Juliet showed her trust to Romeo since she expects him to come back for her “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bent of love be honourable, thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow, by one that I’ll procure to come to thee, Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite; And all my fortunes at thy foot I’ll lay and follow thee my lord throughout the world.” On the other hand, the scene in West Side Story where Tony visited Maria in the boutique, Anita was also there, she said to him “I believe in you.” Tony replied this assurance statement “Of course, I got you.” Both scenes show how high the value of trust Juliet and Maria had for Romeo and Tony respectively.
