In the days before serial killers were acknowledged phenomena murderers were often thought to be mythological creatures, because it was easier to blame inhuman creatures than to accept that humans could be evil enough to commit such crimes. Elizabeth Bathory was one such murderer, and was thought to be a vampire, while Albert Fish held the dubious honor of being called the Werewolf of Wysteria, and even the Boogeyman.
7. Define, compare, and contrast the three types of multicide. Why is it important to differentiate between them?
The three types of multicide are serial killers, mass murderers, and spree killers. Serial killers are defined by the F.B.I. as at least three murders in at least three different locations with an emotional cooling-off period between kills. Some other sources disagree and claim that as many as 5 victims are needed for a killer to qualify as a serial killer. Mass murderers are defined by the F.B.I. as any murder who kills four or more victims at one place and time. Other sources claim this number to be any more than three. For example, both serial killers and spree killers have cooling-off periods, and both spree killers and mass murderers operate over short periods of time. The perpetrators of all three are likely to be white males and all are likely to murder females. However, they do also differ in that serial killers are the only likely to be organized killers, and are also not at all likely to use guns, while both mass and spree killers will do so.
