Trying to put together a movie based in such an acclaimed literary work like The Great Gatsby could never be an easy job, and it would be nearly impossible to recall all the tiny details presented in the book. Creating a cinematographic piece that embodies and preserve the heart and soul of this novel, and keep in all those unforgettable quotes that have been for years in the readers minds it is nearly impossible. With that there is no need to say that the director of the 2013 movie based on F. Scott Fitzgerald had a very complicated work to do. We learn that Jordan Baker is an athlete right away, her whole story is sped up and an entire romance with Nick, present in the book vanishes completely, in the novel she is portrayed as dishonest and in the book, it is hard to define that character because it is given little information about her. Like Jordan, Daisy Buchanan also lacks a certain spark and pettiness that follows the character in the book, instead of the portraying the desire for money and carelessness, this Daisy from the movie presents a damsel-in-destress persona that does not suit the daisy from the book. Being written in the Jazz Era, it is understandable that the book feels like a product of the time, while the work of Luhrmann seems like one bit costume party very modern and accompanied with contemporary music paring this with the quiet and more serious moments between the main characters gives a feel that has nothing to do with Fitzgerald’s romance. These are just some of the most important differences found between the movie inspired in The Great Gatsby and the original novel from 1925, that could corrupt the idea of what the author wrote in the first
