Fly Away Home and "The First" Many authors try to capture the seriousness of being homeless. The similarities between Fly Away Home, and the poem "The First" are pronounced and deserve thorough investigation. This problem should not be ignored, as it is a serious problem though out the world. The authors are reminding us how important it is to help people in that situation. In the story Fly Away Home and the pome "The First" the settings are very different. Andrew the main character of Fly Away Home lives in a airport, and the children in the poem are newly homeless and lives on the streets. Andrew has a place to sleep, eat and where there is heat. The children and there family were just kicked out of there home, and do not have a place to stay. Andrew understands that he is homeless. Therefor kids in the poem do not understand that they are homeless, in the poem it states, "What I remember about that day is boxes staked across the walk and couch springs curling through the air and drawers and tables balanced on the curb and us hollering. Leaping up and around happy to have a playground;" (Clifton 7) this quote shows that the kids do not realize that they just lost there home and they are playing. Andrew knows how not to be noticed when out in public. So it is not that noticeable that he is homeless. The children do not know how to act in public, and Andrew understands how he needs to act. Andrew knows how to act so he will not get noticed, he follows the unwritten rules of being homeless. The kids in the poem are very loud and noticeable and is doing the opposite of what you want to do if your homeless.
