Growing up in a life that is different from a traditional American life subsequently adds to my perspective on life. My family is Assyrian and they are proud of it. They basically have created their own Assyrian country within California and other various states. I have been introduced to both the American lifestyle and the Assyrian lifestyle. Both lifestyles differ from each other greatly. Experiencing both has greatly changed who I am and what I do. However, my life as an Assyrian has had its great times but it has had some very terrible ones. As an Assyrian, religion is an important part of my life. In fact, my father is a priest and that obviously has had a massive impact on my life. I’ve went to church almost every Sunday in the past
Being an Eritrean-American, I have had to learn and balance out both cultures. This came with obstacles that I had to tackle and has allowed me to grow as a person. From learning two different languages, history, and cultures, my experiences have definitely impacted how I want to live my life in this world.
Growing up in a Mexican-American family can be very fun and crazy. Having two different perspectives on two different cultures almost daily really shapes you to become a certain way as you grow up, which is what happened to me. Ever since I was about three months old I have been taking trips to my parents home town for a month time each time we have gone. Practically growing up in both Mexico and the United States for six years has really helped me understand my cultural background and the different parts of my whole culture, such as the food, heritage, language and culture.
Although having a Mexican mother and an American father was not always socially acceptable, growing up with a different food taste, having a close-knit family, as well as regularly getting disciplined shaped how I am as a person today. I was dipped into a very different childhood most children did not grow up into.
As I grew older, between the transition of a child to a teenager, I learned more about my family, its culture and background, and even some back story about how they came to the United States to the first place. Back at home, my parents are certainly not home for long and everyday we weren't
What similarities and differences did Egypt and Mesopotamia have and why was Egypt more politically unified than its neighbor, Mesopotamia? I think in order to answer these questions it is important to look at how both societies lived. Egypt and Mesopotamia were two civilizations existing during the time period of 2000-1200 BCE.(text, 97) These civilizations were shaped by their environment, involved with trade, and faced changes in government after the 100 year drought; however, they differed in that Egypt was shaped by the Nile, traded goods for goods and changed their outlook on the pharaoh who was ruler of all; whereas, Mesopotamia was shaped by the Tigris and Euphrates, traded money for goods, and had a ruler over rulers. The governed harmonic life style of Egypt led this society to be more politically unified; whereas, Mesopotamia’s government led to many different ways of structure, thus creating a less unified society.
Being the first generation born in this country, my siblings and I have the rare advantage of not only seeing life as it is here, the country we were born in, but also the broader spectrum of life and lifestyles. Growing up we had many experiences common to American people, but at the same time we had such a different and intimate view of life because the experiences we had being exposed to our Swiss heritage. The heritage we have because we are the children of immigrants.
Because of my culture, it has allowed for me to be more understanding of those that are different from me. The recognition of what it is to be different from what normal American culture may look like has brought forth a new and deeper level of empathy without even realizing. Growing up in a diverse area where my group of friends came from a wide variety of backgrounds has helped me to see the similarities we share as well as getting more acquainted and understanding of why certain groups do the things that they do. With that being said, I recognize that though I may be more equipped to related with people from different backgrounds a bit more than someone else, I know that I may still face some challenges (especially with how this nation is when it comes to race and cultural relations). As a social worker, a bit part of my profession is to create societal change.
Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, and Greece were all historical civilizations that made history the way it is today. The three civilizations differed in many different ways, but they were also quite similar in other aspects. The focus of survival, beliefs, daily life, and many other focuses connect the three civilizations.
The Egyptian and Mesopotamian religion and society were similar, but their government system was different. The religions in Egypt and Mesopotamia were similar because both were polytheistic, had beliefs of an afterlife, as well as priests who were part of the upper levels of the social hierarchy. Social similarities between Egypt and Mesopotamia included: rigid social structure, dependence on slavery, and authoritative religious structure. However, the system of government was different because Egyptian society was governed by a theocratic monarchy, while Mesopotamia was ruled by a traditional monarchy.
Of the first civilizations, Mesopotamia and Egypt left behind the most widely available documented look at the past (92). Interestingly enough, the basis for societal rank was comparable between these two civilizations. But despite similarities in social stratification, Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilization had very dissimilar views on life and the afterlife.
Apart from Persian and Neo-Assyrian empires being good or bad based on the way they ruled their empire, it more about which empire had smarter leaders. The Neo-Assyrian empire fell before the Persian not only because of their oppressive way of ruling but also because they weren't smart about the ways that they could help their empire prolong. They put more importance to military and to showing off their power through propaganda (Pollard, 2014, p.130). Consequently, the empire fell to the hands of Nineveh along with forces from Medes and Neo-Babylonians. Civilization is an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached. Mesopotamia and Egypt are both perfect examples of this definition. Both of these ancient civilizations have been credited with providing the world with a plethora of contributions dating back to around 4000 B.C.
Before the Assyrians conquered Israel and took over, they lived in a lovely place just north of Mesopotamia. The Assyrians lived in Assyria, where their name comes from. One of the reasons the Assyrians were able to be so aggressive and effective is because their land is rich and fertile. Throughout Assyrian history, there have been two languages, Ancient Assyrian, and Modern Assyrian. Even though there were two different languages, the alphabet stayed the same for both. There have also been two religions, Ashurism and Christianity. Ashurism was the first religion, and the word “Assyrian” comes from the Latin word “Shur” in Ashurism. For approximately 6,600 years the Assyrians have lived in their homeland Assyria. By 1918 there were 75% of Austria's population to actually be Assyrians. The Assyrians conquered many different areas throughout their history, and have almost always been the best of the best.
It is through the events in the journey of life that shapes and molds who we are as people. As for me, immigrating to America was one of those milestones that have shaped who I am. Those who have had the opportunity of moving from a different country to America know what a privilege it is. I felt the same honor to know that I would be journeying to the land of opportunity. Without hesitance, I spent the last two months packing and making the final preparations before moving to a new continent. Although it was a bittersweet time, leaving my beloved family behind, I knew that I couldn’t resist the treasure that waited for me in the new land. Coming from a developing nation the high level of sophistication that greeted me on arrival to America made feel like I was in paradise.
The Assyrian civilization located in the Middle East. It rose due to their intimidating army. They had chariots, mounted weapons, and siege weapons used to break down gates and walls to take over kingdoms. They were famous for being sly and quick in battle. They would overturn a village without anyone knowing the Assyrians were on the verge of taking over. They had cruel and gruesome ways to instill fear in villagers of the newly conquered area. They would cut off appendages, ears, nose, or their head. This left everyone petrified of the Assyrians. They would split up the population they took over by spreading them to different parts of the empire to prevent uprising. Due to the population growing, governors were assigned to rule over province.
