Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities Old age is inevitable. Sooner or later, it will affect our parents making our loved ones unable to take care of themselves. It is up to us to decide where our parents will live safely and happily during their senior years. Some people, however, are too busy with their own life to take care of their parents at home. They choose a nursing home or an assisted living facility instead. Although nursing homes and assisted living facilities share similar goals and often have services in common, the differences in medical care, freedom, and cost far outweigh the similarities. Like nursing homes, assisted living facilities focus on keeping the elders safe, healthy, and happy. Both have daily personal and medical care such as bathing, dressing, eating, and taking medicines. An assisted living facility only provide minor medical care. Residents don’t require constant care but need assistance with daily activities. An average assisted living facility has 54 units.1 The facility size varies greatly from small and private residential houses to large apartments for hundreds of residents. Generally, an assisted living facility’s structure tends to feel more like a home and less like a hospital. There are extensive common living space and outside grounds offering seniors opportunities for socialization and helping residents feel a sense of community. Residents also can bring in their own belongings and furniture to feel more comfortable. Besides, large facilities often have full of recreational activities such as yoga classes, movie nights, meals in the dining room, and shopping trips.
