Abstinence Vs. Sex Education
Sexuality is one major characteristic of human development across the lifespan. During adolescence there are rapid biological and psychosocial changes that occur, which is why sexuality during this critical period is important. Hormones increase during puberty, and adolescents’ attraction to potential sexual partners enables their bodies to reproduce. Psychosocial development enhances teens’ abilities to negotiate sexual relationships and greater degree of autonomy from parents (Child Development, sexual activity pg. 359). Schools in the U.S have played an important role in educating adolescents about sex and preparing them for the responsibilities that come with sexual maturation.
In the first decade of twentieth century sex educators in the United States began working with public schools to give the adolescent’s careful guidance and information that parents may fail to provide for their children or young adults. Sex educators mission was to end the curiosity that adolescents had about sex. Physicians that would explain the fundamentals of the reproductive system, and dangers of sex before marriage taught the education programs they …show more content…

Even though teen pregnancy rates have recently declined in the United States, we still have the highest rate in the entire nation. Reports recently show that 18-19 year olds reported having ever had sex and when they did, they would use contraceptive or other methods. Not only is sex education giving teens the knowledge of their sexuality and health, but also it is giving them the knowledge on how to practice safer sex and pregnancy prevention. Sex educators can teach abstinence but for some teens they will not practice it, which is why they need to be informed and taught on how to stay
