At first, I was resentful towards assignments that I felt were limiting my abilities. I didn’t want to understand why I was taking sculpture and photography classes when all I believed I could be inspired by was drawing. I was guarded by the pencil and the page. I felt safe within the containment of an 8x11 inch piece of paper. Perspective drawing, color wheels, value scales, and live models frustrated me because they were not allowing me to do what I wanted to do with my art. I was getting a lot more than I thought out of those classes; they were teaching me how to look at the world in a different way. My perspective shifted, and so did my love for art as I was exposed to it’s fascinating history and new mediums like word and collage. I began seeing the world in different ways, noticing beauty in what most people say is mundane. During the same year, I joined a group called The Young Curators, where we were given the resources and space to develop our own exhibition. Before this, I had never thought about the relationships between a group of work, light, space, and sound.
