Art had always been a big part of my life, so I feel that art is more than just an academic subject as it is a way of life that gives people an outlet to express themselves. Art allows us to express ourselves when words fall short while also giving us the ability to share a story without a single word being said. For centuries, people from all over the world have used art to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and actions throughout their lives, creating stories for others to observe, interpret, and make meaning of. Art not only encompasses expression, it also includes creative thinking, higher order thinking, and problem solving. Art stresses the importance of developing creative problem solving skills to express and learn about ourselves and the people around us. As an educator, I feel that a teacher cannot effective teach a content area that one does not love. Students will have a greater ability to learn more and become more engaged in the subject if the teacher is enthusiastic about the content area being taught. Thus, it is my job as an art educator to provide students with an inlet and outlet for creativity, self-expression, critical thinking, and problem solving.
