College Admissions Essay: Why I Get My First Job

Many people get their first job when they are in high school or college. Usually those jobs are part-time, seasonal, or temporary positions. In these positions people receive their first-hand experience of the working world and also, what it would be like do that job every day for a living. Nine times out of ten, we become unsatisfied with that position, much like I was back then. Then we are forced to begin to give more thought on what it is we actually would like to do for a living. No one wants a job that they hate, and we have all witnessed that at least at one point in the working world. So we begin to think what is it we want to do and what can we do to obtain it. This is where we begin to see the big line separating a job from a career.

I got my first job in high school and it was a seasonal job as a busser at a prestigious country club. I loved to service people and work with others. However, I did not enjoy waiting hand and foot for other people and it was many times I felt under paid. I knew then this was not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Since then, I decided I want to do something I was good at and that I liked. A lot of times we get the idea that our passion, hobbies or even things we're good at won’t make us a lot of money. Sometimes we feel like our hobbies and things we are good at aren’t feasible enough to even provide a reasonable income to live off of. For example, when I was younger I absolutely loved art and was even a proficient at drawing. It was just a fun hobby that I did when I was bored. But after I graduated high school I didn’t pursue my love for art in college. I did not even give a second thought at turn it into a career, because I thought “oh artist don’t make a lot. What I didn’t realize is that if I could have followed my dream and put my all into making a successful career.
