Former UCLA Coach John Wooden once said, “Success is a peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” As a child, we have no idea what we are doing, where we are going or where we will end up. We need supervision, structure and guidance to lead us until we gain further knowledge to help us make informed choices on our own behalf. I believe success is determined by each individual and not by others. My greatest success in life is the day I graduated Epic Charter School.
As a small child, I was diagnosed with ADHD at an early age. I began preschool when I was four years old. Always being redirected to sit down, stop fidgeting or focus. My preschool teacher just thought I need my back-end busted and I would be fine. My mom just asked me to please listen and stay in your seat. I did the best I could do. In Kindergarten, my mom was asked to attend a meeting. They told my mom that a school therapist has suggested that we see our Doctor. I needed to be put on medication that would stop me from moving around all the time. I could not return to school until that happened. My mom complied and took me to the doctor to be seen. They said my IQ was too high and I did not qualify for this plan. That I would have to mainstream with my other peers. I struggled all my sixth-grade year. My mom was constantly fighting for me to have a proper education. In Seventh Grade, my mom threatened to sue the school system. She stood before the Board of Education that she had filed for due process. That my education is in jeopardy because they took the thing that I needed most, Individualized Learning. My mom told them, not all children learn the same. How can we group them together and expect them to learn the same? My mom won her due process suite and I was returned to an Individual Learning
