Dear Admission Office committee of the University of Pennsylvania,

At first, I would like to sincerely thank the Admission Office for taking the time to look through my application amongst thousand of applicants and offering me the singular opportunity to be on the waiting list. To manifest the tremendous impact that this decision caused, I echo my father’s words: I am proud of you. You have not only broken all the barriers and became the first family member to enroll at a University but also conquered a place of hope on the waiting list of your dream college. Secondly, I sent my application forms to UPenn in December of 2015; however, as a dynamic person, I have changed and accomplished some goals since then. Afterward, this result meant that I was admitted to the three best Brazilian Engineering Schools: State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and University of São Paulo (USP). Moreover, my performance on the vestibular (admission test for Brazilian universities) was excellent: I ranked among the top-10 Computer Engineering students at UNICAMP, I conquered the first place at the Computer Science undergraduate course of UFMG, and I scored better than 99.5% of the students who took the test to USP. However, after the first test week, I figured out my euphoria was ephemeral, and I was nothing but skeptical and disappointed. Despite the fact that my performance at the tests and projects was extremely satisfying - I got the second highest Calculus and Linear Algebra score and highest Computer Programming score among freshman students and also developed a robot prototype based on BB-8 (the Star Wars movie droid) - I was not content with my formal education. The Polytechnic School of USP does not have a flexible curriculum; consequently, students are forced to study only engineering-related subjects, leaving no time to explore another area of studies. POLI graduates engineers but not social and well-rounded
