Code of Ethics is something that has already been implanted in our system as to what is right and what is wrong. If one were to define as to what it is, they would see that includes one’s values with responsibility along with personal and clinical opinion and impairs our effective decision making. Like how Potter Stewart once said, “Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have the right to do and what is the right thing to do” (Stewart, n.d.). We have the chance to change the way someone perceives a dilemma when the opportunity presents itself. Principles of ethics is not just about protecting individuals under this rule, it is supposed to be honored by these individuals as well. One of the rules that is important to me would be dealing with discriminating someone because of a disability or the way they look or act. Being a Speech Language Pathologist, one will experience a client that has a disability on a daily basis, whether it involves a speech disorder, or something more advanced, such as autism or aphasia. Discrimination is not only dealing with a disability, it also involves race, sexual preference, culture, and age. Having the ability to be open minded is an extremely important aspect to acquire in this field alone. The reason for my belief in this is because, if someone does in fact stay quiet and look the other way, they are not only putting that person’s life at risk, but someone else’s as well. Our personal code of ethics can interfere with our professional code of ethics, especially if it is a friend of yours who is in the wrong. Regardless of this conflict, one must always put their professional ethics over personal opinions, because from a professional stance, you might be protecting your friend, however damaging the person you are supposed to be taking care
