The United States Coast Guard are dedicated men and women who put their lives in danger to protect the United States and the people. The United States Coast Guard was founded by the Government on August 4, 1970. The Coast Guard is a section of the United States military. The Coast Guard are the first to respond to many accidents on the ocean surrounding the United States and on big waterways. They also protect United States ports and waters surrounding the United States. The Coast Guard has a lot of history and many surprising facts about itself.

The United States Coast Guard is a government law enforcement agency and is also one of the five military forces at the same time (U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve, 2016). The Coast Guard is one of the armed military force that protects the United States and is the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard has about 56,000 members that are serving and protecting the United States. All of the people that are serving in the Coast Guard are United States citizen. Also, all members that join the Coast Guard must be between the ages of seventeen to twenty-seven. Enlisted members of the Coast Guard earn an initial salary of approximately twenty thousand dollars a year. As part of the benefit packages, all members in the coast guard also get 30 days of paid vacation, free housing and free meals that are included at the assigned stations. The men and women that are in the Coast Guard receive free medical attention at no cost. To join the Coast Guard, people must attend an eight-week boot camp that is held in Cape May, New Jersey (U.S. Coast Guard, n.d.). The United States Coast Guard also has a schooling program that they call the Coast Guard Academy. The Coast Guard’s schooling program is the smallest out of all the other military schooling programs. The Coast Guard Academy is held in New London, Connecticut and was founded in 1876. First, the United States Coast Guard is the biggest organization of its kind found throughout the world today (David, 2008). In 1918, two sisters named Genevieve and Lucille Baker were the first women to ever serve in the United States Coast Guard. The oldest man to ever serve in the Coast Guard ended up being 105 years old. Before the United States Coast Guard was transferred into Homeland Security in 2003, it was part of the Department of Transportation. The Coast Guard saves on average ten lives a day. In 2005 during Hurricane Katrina, the Coast Guard rescued about 33,000 live along the East Coast of the United States. They also check 679 ships coming into United States ports and around 170,000 crew members and passenger on an average day (Brown, 2016). The United States Coast Guard’s old saying was “You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.” The Coast Guard has a new saying that says, “Semper Paratus”, which is in Latin, and in English means “Always Ready” (Ostrom, 2006). Coast Guard is an older than the Navy. The Coast Guard also deploys men and women around the world to serve. The men and women serve in Japan, the Netherlands, and many other popular countries around the world.
