This learning outcome demonstrates my development in knowledge and skills in co-ordinating and providing care in complex situations. Understanding the complexity of health environment and engaging in activities to improve its effects is important in delivering high quality and safe patient care (Kannampallil et al, 2011). Nurses need to use critical thinking and clinical judgement in providing high standard of nursing care. There are evidences from the literature suggest that nurses fails to identify the critical information they need in order to make clinical judgements (Lewin, 2011). Lindsey and Jenkin (2013) added that, clinical judgement enables the nurses to determine the appropriate nursing intervention when planning the nursing care, especially the ability to manage the deteriorating patients. When referring to appendix 3 I used effectively my clinical judgement and critical thinking skills and prioritised the need for the patient. In his analysis Potgeiter (2012) added that simply following the process, analysing the data, prescribed techniques cannot guarantee good clinical judgement that will solve the patient problems. He added that , newly qualified staff do not meet the expectations of making effective judgement in the clinical settings (Potgeiter, 2012), therefore students should be guided to understand patient needs, develop appropriate responses, and adjust care plans on the basis of clinical reasoning and judgement (Lindsey and Jenkins, 2013). Moreover, Ozkahraman et al (2011) added that the nurses need to think critically in order to make sound clinical judgement in planning, managing, and evaluating the health care of the patients. NEWS is widely used in the hospital settings to identify the deteriorating patients (RCP, 2015). However, Eccles et al (2014) raised some concerns regarding the use of NEWS in patients with COPD, who may frequently trigger high on the NEWS despite being clinically stable and could set off unnecessary clinical triggers. Therefore he indicated that a simple variant of NEWS known as chronic respiratory early warning score might better to be suit to achieve this aim. By looking back to my first year I realised that, I improved my confidence and skills in providing care to the patients and make appropriate clinical decisions.
