In this time and age, the use of technology in delivery of healthcare has become a target for many healthcare institutions owing to the benefits that these technologies have on the quality of healthcare that patients are receive. Examples include Electronic Medical Records and Electronic Health Records which help in management of patient data. In the recent past, healthcare providers have been making clinical decisions based on their personal reasoning but the innovation of the clinical decision support system (CDSS) has brought about changes in the process of making decisions by the nurses. In partnership with the National Decision Support Company (NDSC), they have developed a tool that helps in ordering of laboratory tests to avoid duplication of unnecessary or excessive tests. This was implemented in 2017 and the system was made available to all the healthcare providers through the electronic health records (EHR) system. The technology is known as CareSelect Lab and it is designed to collect clinical knowledge relating to patient conditions and then offering the best recommendations that would help in improving the patients care while cutting down the costs through accurate and appropriate tests while dismissing unnecessary tests. The rationale behind developing the use of this technology is because research has shown that conducting excess laboratory tests can be harmful to the patients’ health.
