What are the classic character traits of a murderer? The first trait that will usually comes to mind is someone who is confident and courageous. The next, someone who is dangerous and deadly. Last, an individual with such a deep intent for power and control in society that they are willing to do whatever it take to kill the people that stand in their way. As the story of Macbeth progressed the readers watched closely as the making of a murderer unfolded before their eyes and Macbeth, a once innocent character, became a vicious murderer. The play of Macbeth begins with following the main protagonist Macbeth himself as he transforms from a man with very little confidence and courage to a courageous and strong willed man seeking approval from his wife Lady Macbeth. He desired the confidence to show his wife that he was worthy of her and also worthy of the throne of Scotland. Some will do whatever it takes to obtain this control and that is exactly what Macbeth did. He committed the murderous act of killing the one person in his way, King Duncan. As discussed previously, the hallucinations that Macbeth experienced in the end of the first scene of Act I, showed vividly how badly he desired this power and control. The hallucinations included seeing the dagger covered in blood that he would eventually be killing the king with, he also saw himself committing the murderous act and finally he hears a death knell. A knell indicating that he should commit this crime and he says to himself, “Hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell. That summons thee to heaven or to hell” (II. i. 76-77). This is displaying how he has no empathy for the death of the king or if he goes to heaven or hell.
