Eleanor Roosevelt The citizen I researched for my Civics project was Eleanor Roosevelt. I found many interesting facts about her and what she has done for the country and other people as the First Lady. In my opinion, she is a great leader with many ideas and plans to make everyone equal. Roosevelt has showed all the six pillars of character in some way. She has showed trustworthiness by delivering messages to Franklin whether they were good or bad messages that he might not want to hear. Secondly, Eleanor showed respect by respecting women’s rights so they had just as many rights as men. Also, she has showed responsibility by attending important meetings and joining many organizations. Fairness was also something Eleanor was all about. She
She traveled throughout the United States, one in particular she became a voice for those people in need, such as, the youth, African Americans, tenant farmers, and also the working women. These groups had been greatly affected by the economic crisis of the 30’s known as The Great Depression. During Franklin’s run as President he tried to battle the series of social programs known as the New Deal. Eleanor became a key contact within the administration for the officials that were seeking support from the President.

Eleanor Roosevelt was an outstanding First Lady, she was the longest lasting First Lady in office and helped define and shape the role of the First Lady’s duties in office. She played many roles as the First Lady, she made public appearances with her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt, she was a leading activist in women rights and civil rights, she held many press conferences, wrote a column daily in the newspaper, and hosted radio shows at least once a week. Though her and her husband’s time in office may have been difficult, Eleanor proudly supported New Deal programs and helped create many government programs such as the National Youth Administration and the Works progress Administration
Assuming the Presidency at the depth of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped the American people regain faith in themselves. He brought hope as he promised prompt, vigorous action, and asserted in his Inaugural Address, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Despite an attack of poliomyelitis, which paralyzed his legs in 1921, he was a charismatic optimist whose confidence helped sustain the American people during the strains of economic crisis and world war.

When her husband became the President, Eleanor Roosevelt made herself a strong speaker on behalf of a wide range of social causes, including youth employment and civil rights for blacks and women. She also had compassion for the Jewish and helped them go through the time when Hitler had power. She did all of her work with self-confidence, authority, independence, and cleverness. Eleanor Roosevelt is one of the greatest women who ever lived because of her accomplishments, her benefits to mankind, and her motives to accomplish her goals.

Eleanor had no problem in making it known that she supported certain things, and because of who she was and how she acted she usually gained support of her moral and political beliefs. She was a very influential and positive woman during the Great Depression.

Heroes and leaders have long had a popular following in literature and in our own imaginations. From Odysseus in ancient Grecian times to May Parker in Spider-man Two, who states, “We need a hero, courageous sacrificing people, setting examples for all of us. I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble” (Raimi, 2004). Organizations need heroes, too. We call them organizational leaders. The study of organizational leadership, then, is really the study of what makes a person a successful hero. Or, what processes, constructs, traits, and dynamics embody the image of a successful leader.
Throughout history, there have been great leaders, some for the good of humanity, and some for the not-so good of humanity. The one element all leaders have in common is in some way, have changed the course of history. The one great leader I have found to be interesting and envision of a great leader is William Bradford, an original passenger on the Mayflower, and the first ever governor elected on what is to become, American Soil.

If Youngs’s thesis was to illustrate how the sufferings and achievements of E. Roosevelt’s life was what made it possible for her to become the influential woman that she was, then Youngs did a great job by incorporating so much of E. Roosevelt’s early life into the biography. But if Youngs did not intend for that to be his thesis then this book was a confusing mess that left readers wondering why he put so much of E. Roosevelt’s early life in the book but a minimal amount of her life during her husband’s long presidential terms in office.
Sojourner Truth for instance was a wonderful person with a courageous mind and strong ambition. She had a major impact on the US today concerning color barriers and challenged justice wherever she thought it should be challenged. During my exchange to the US I learned a lot about this woman and was really amazed by what she achieved. To me she is the real example for a strong-minded person who was able to change everything around her without changing herself for others.
