The quote is saying that we as a nation depend on our common beliefs and values and the myths of our struggling community to come together to overcome hardships. A feeling of belonging is what brings people together to form nations. Nations can be based on ethnicity, language, culture, religion, geography, relationship to land, spirituality, or politics. A good nation and the best nation is a civic nation because we all have the same beliefs and values and it doesn’t matter what race, colour, creed, gender, ethnicity we are, or what language we speak, it simply doesn’t matter. In ethnic nations it's not the peoples identities that create the nation its the nation that fully formed their identities. Ethnic nations don't work as well as civic nations because the people don't have the same beliefs and values it's only based on ethnicity, religion, or culture. Ethnic nations in history have not proven good at all like the nazis. The nazis used fear and propaganda to create a nation. The people were forced to have the same beliefs and values, even though they didn’t believe and value the same things which in the end did not go well. The pre-existing ethnic backgrounds are what form and hold the nations together. Civic nations are basically communities in which all people are equal and are united in patriotic attachments to their nations and a shared set of beliefs and values. To be able to choose where you live and what kind of society you want to live in is the only nationalism that should exist, there would be a lot more peace in the world. It's the form of nationalism that best suits any country because of our values of freedom, tolerance, equality, and individual rights. People make myths a part of their identity which creates a sense of belonging to the nation. They help us come together and form our shared sense of national identity. No one expects everyone to agree and conform to these myths and national symbols but it gives most of us a sense of belonging which is important to everyone. Our myths and national symbols bring us together and give us a great deal of pride it's what makes us who we are and were proud. The myths of canada influence and bring the nation together and they make Canadians feel good about themselves. No myth is entirely true, not everyone in canada has a good sense of humor, they don't all love hockey, and they're not all tolerant and polite but these myths have created an idea of what the country strives to be and that when they come together they can achieve great things. These myths often serve as important national symbols and often are the influence of the countries beliefs and values.
