I attended a church sermon on Saturday, April 9, at the Emmanuel Catholic church for my critique of a live public speaking event. The church is located in Delray Beach, FL, off Military Trail. The building for the church itself is modern looking, and humble in appearance. It is surrounded by trees with open field next to it, offering a quiet and tranquil mood. Inside the church itself the main room was of moderate size, and filled with row after row of chairs for those attending. The audience for the sermon started of relatively small, but grew early on during the speaking. All told there were approximately thirty people attending, though there was room for much more than that. It appeared that many of the audience members were elderly males and females, with only a few exceptions of younger attendees. A majority of them were Caucasian, but the gender dispersion was mixed roughly equally between male and female. All of the audience members appeared to be middle class. The strongest aspect being the context he gave to what he was speaking about. Whether it was a verse to repeat, a prayer for someone recently deceased, or discussing the trip to historical holy land sites, he always made it clear what and why he was speaking about them, and why the audience should care. Following this aspect in effectiveness, pastor Sockol use of pathos played a very important role in his speaking, so important in fact, that it made up a majority of the structure of his sermon. It was successful in reaching the audience, getting them to feel or to think, and of giving them reassurance of their faith. Emotion is important speaking because it helps someone recall what was said with relative ease if they were personally moved by it
