The real life figure of Chris McCandless, written about by Jon Krakauer in Into The Wild, represents a code hero. Chris grew up with a tightly knit family including his parents and younger sister Carine. Even at a young age, Chris always displayed a resentment for his parents lifestyle, and often wanted nothing to do with them. In letters to his sister Chris would renounce his parents by calling them names or complaining about them. Although Chris did follow much of his parents advice, including going to college, Chris didn’t want the life that his parents led. He respected and cherished the lives he met on his journey. A code hero does exactly this, show loyalty and honor to the people they meet. Similarly, the code hero has been shown to view things positively, which is very true in the case of Chris McCandless. Throughout his journey he faces immense hardships such as lack of food, dangerous weather, and the attempt of survival in the Alaskan wilderness. Chris takes these factors and doesn’t complain or get angry. Instead he remains relatively calm and fights through all situations. This is the determination and drive found within a code hero. But the one determining factor that greatly shines McCandless as a true code hero is the way in which he perishes. Chris had been surviving in the Alaskan wilderness for weeks, but due to a possible poisoning from the mold found on potato seeds, Chris became severely weak and ill. In the final chapter of Chris’s life, he writes, “I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!” Similar to Harry, Chris does not experience pain during his death, instead proclaiming that he has had a happy life, and doesn’t regret
