After the Civil War ended in America, there were new battles to be fought. Chinese immigrants started to move to America to find jobs and build their homes and families, while America also struggled to compromise with the Native Americans for land. The problem of discrimination did not vanish once the African American slaves became free. Bigotry and injustice continued to be a problem with the Indians and the Chinese immigrants, and both were treated very badly. While both the Chinese immigrants and the Native Americans were mistreated, the Chinese had it worse. As the United States sought to expand west, Native Americans began to get in the way of those plans. Gold Digging was not an easy job to begin with. Enduring wind and waves on the ships, the extreme heat or cold, and having very little amounts of food and poor clothing made them grieve much. On top of all this, they were pushed and kicked by drunks, hit with sand and rocks that were thrown at them, and instead of receiving help from passersby, they were laughed and scoffed at. Robbers stripped them of their clothes and belongings, and sometimes even murdered innocent Chinese mine workers. These immigrants did not understand english, and were unable to defend themselves against the Americans. Some Chinese men, Pun Chi , in particular, tried reaching out to Congress on behalf of all Chinese immigrants asking for mercy and peace. They brought to attention that America’s claim to be a christian country were badly contradicted because of the way they treated the Chinese. In his appeal to Congress in 1870, he says “Now why is it that, when our people come to your country, instead of being welcomed with unusual respect and kindness, on the contrary they are treated with unusual contempt and evil?” The Chinese were told that if they came to America, that the Citizens of the U.S. would care for, love, and respect the Chinese race, yet they received the exact
