The decision of whether young criminals should be tried in juvenile courts or adult courts has created a lot of controversy throughout the years. Juveniles should be tried as juveniles. The ones who are tried as adults often undergo a very harsh castigation. Considering the fact that they are very young, being tried according to their age is fairer. Each year children as young as 13 are sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. According to American Civil Liberty Union or (ACLU), 2570 children are sentenced as juveniles to life in prison without parole. According to researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health, "the frontal lobe, that controls impulse control, does not develop until around 17 years of age". So how could one think that a 13 year old could think rationally? Children are not adults, they do not think like adults, they do not act like adults, and they sure do not need to be put into prison like adults. A child still needs training and discipline. Children can be rehabilitated, if they do not end of in an adult prison. All things considered, adult prisons would be wasted on children. Children should not be locked up for life. Instead of spending money to keep these juvenile locked up, it could be used on better detention programs to help rehabilitate juvenile offenders. It is clear that sentencing a juvenile to life in prison would have dire consequences on both the child and society. A child can still be turned around in most cases, an adult is less likely to be turned around. Advocates also point out that juveniles have a greater capacity for reforming their behavior than adults. There are success stories where people convicted of murder as juveniles have gone on to work as lawyers, editing prominent legal publications, or counselors working with troubled youth.
