Chihuahuas and Their Adaptations
Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog in the world, with the average adult weighing anywhere from two to six pounds. No one is completely sure where the breed of Chihuahuas originated, but an ancestor of this tiny dog might have been the Techichi breed. The Techichi is a small, mute dog, and its origins date as far back as 8 A.D. These dogs lived with the Mayans and the Toltecs. The Techichis had long hair and were bigger than the average modern day Chihuahua. It is highly probable that Techichis were bred with a smaller, hairless breed called the Chinese Crested dog, which led to the emerging of the now popular Chihuahua. A Chihuahua’s small size can also be seen as an advantageous feature. The Chihuahua can easily maneuver through small places to hide or escape from larger predators. The Techichi was larger and mute; this may have contributed to their extinction. Chihuahuas are the world’s smallest dog breed. They also tend to live longer because of this. Chihuahuas can live up to seventeen years old. Large dog breeds age faster than smaller breeds and with the Chihuahua being the smallest dog breed they tend to live longer than most other breeds especially the significantly larger ones such as the Great Dane. The amount of body mass can affect a dog’s life dramatically. For every 4.4 pounds of body mass a dog gains, it loses one month of life expectancy. A Great Dane’s or St. Bernard’s life expectancy is less than ten years. This is a significant difference between the life expectancy of larger breeds and the Chihuahua.
